Welcome to the boards Kylie!

As for favorite season, for me, it's a tos up between Seasons 3 and 5.

As for least favorite season, I'd have to go for Season 4, but that's not to say I didn't like it a whole bunch. Just wasn't as strong as the rest.

Waht about you? Which are your fav/least fav seasons?

Fav is a toss up between 2 and 5, but I'm leaning toward 5 which is shock to me since I liked having Buffy/Angel together.

Least Fav would be probably 4. It had some really good epis but overall I didn't care for it as much as the others.

My fave season would be the third I think, it had my fave ever ep; The Prom and Faith and lots of other good stuff

Season 1 would be my least favourite, partly because it was short I think and there didn't seem to be any particularly great episodes.

And welcome to the boards, Kylie

Welcome, Kylie.

My favorite was S2. S5 is probably better from a technical standpoint, but I love the classics.

Least favorite: S4. Too much Riley, not enough Scooby action.

In order:

S2 Angel (Well, Judgement - Epiphany is unbeaten imo, the rest of the season was neugh)

S1 Angel (as a season it was nearly as weak, although not as weak, as S4 but it had my fave eps)

S2 Buffy (Angel Arc was cool)

S3 Buffy (no really bad eps, every other season has one)

S5 Buffy (so-so story, great acting and emtion crap but)

S1 Buffy (medicore eps. Introduced all the characters)

S4 Buffy (crap)

I don't have a certain favorite. I like all the seasons about the same except for season 4. Buffy was just too whiney in it and there was way too much Riley and not enough scooby gang

Hi, Kylie!

Favorite is season 5.

Least favorite would have to be season 4. It has several of my favorite eps (Restless, Hush, and Something Blue- to name a few), but too many of my least favorite eps.

Favorite season = toss up between S2 and S3. My favorite ep has to be The Zeppo. (we are alot alike)

Lots of S4 slamming going on. I don't think that it was bad, just a different kind of season. Lots of humor, ecspecially with the introduction of Spike and his chip thing.

I think that many of us here are B/A shippers, even though some won't admit it. So, that would make sense that S4 would be disliked, what without Angel and all that.

my favorite is 5, with 3 being a close runner-up.

Although S4 was pretty crappy, it had Hush, which made the whole thing worthwhile.

But then again, it also had Riley...

I've only seen half of season 5 so far, and I think that it will probably be my fav season by the end, also liked season 3. I would have to say that worst would be a toss up between s1 and s4, but more towards s1.

on the Angel front though, just watched the first half of s2 and wooooowwwwww!!!!!

In order:

1) Buffy 2 - Enjoyable arc all throughout, and I enjoyed every episode at least a little (except Bad Eggs)

2)Angel 1 - I think it was strong throughout and had some really great episodes. Close to Buffy 2 in
quality.

3) (three way tie) Angel 2 - Very strong up until after Epiphany, then it was still good, but nothing special. Oh except for Happy Anniversery which was god awfull.

Buffy 3 - Good overall arc, good storytelling, good episodes. A winner.

Buffy 1 - The Master arc was incredibly good My second favorite, next to the Spike/Angelus one. However, the acting is just not up to par, and the writing is spoty in places. The episodes not dealing with Angel or The Master weren't anything special either.

4) Buffy 5 - Had good episodes when they focused on Spike (Fool for Love, Crush.) The Body was great too, and the final 3 were incredible, Sprial was a classic Season 2 style episode. However, the first half of the season was pretty much Season 4 quality... and except for the two episodes which focused totally on him, Spike's development was unrealistic.

5) Buffy 4 - It had good episodes like Hush, the ones dealing with Faith, and Spike and the Gem... However the overall arc was not well done (the idea was great though) Add in the fact all the other episodes were pretty much forgettable, and you have the worst season.

Fav - S2
Least Fav - S4 (the Riley factor like some mentioning it kinda sums it up, too many stories on him and the initiative)

Well, my fave is Season 5, just great great stuff this year. Awesome arcs, not just the main one, but the side arcs as well. And great acting by Trachtenberg, Sutherland, Marsters, and SMG particularly.

And, I'm not gonna debate S4 vs. S2 again or anything, but S4 as worst over S1? What are you people watching? I swear we must not be getting the same episodes. Anyone S1, is the worst, though still good compared to most TV.

BigRock:
Episode: The Wish
Vamp Xander/mordax: Hmm...Let's think.

S1:
Pros
- WTTH/the Harvest: Lotsa fun.
- The Witch: Loved it. Absolutely loved it.
- The Pack: Loved it.
- The Puppet Show: Kinda goofy. Loved it, though.
- OOM, OOS: That was when Cordy became my favorite.
- Prophecy Girl: One of my all time faves. Even now.
Cons
- Teacher's Pet: Fork guy, beating the monster with a squeaky tape. No thanks.
- Nightmares: Ugh. Clever idea, lousy execution.

S4:
Pros
- Hush
- Pangs
- Something Blue
Cons
- TMR (TOO MUCH RILEY!)
- The Initiative. (Lame. No procedure whatsoever. No buddy system, no face masks. Conflict of interest.)
- Blasters.
- Adam. (Ugh!)
- I missed Xander. I missed Willow. I missed Giles.

It was almost like a whole different show. One that I didn't like as much. (It was still good, and I still loved a lot of it, but...)

S1 wasn't as good as S2 or S5, but it was still nonstop Scooby action.

I agree with the comparison between seasons 1&4.
What I don't agree on are some of the points that you list.
For example:
Point 1
You put Nightmares in the cons list because of the main bad guy(the ugly man) - what you seem to forget is that is good because it's the 1st meeting between Buffy and The Master.
Point 2
I really liked Riley because he's helped Buffy and co
E.G :
Hush
He helps Buffy defeat the Gentlemen
New Moon Rising
He tries to free Oz
Point 3
You say there's no scooby interaction.
Well you're wrong just take another look at Primeval or Restless to see what I mean.
Point 4
What's so ugh about Adam - all the other villians in season 4 have only appeared in 1 or 2 episodes e.g Veruca,Gachnar,Faith,Sunday,Kathy.
Need I say more.

That's two episodes. The last two episodes. It doesn't make up for a season.

Other villians didn't appear much so that means Adam is good? what? That has nothing to do with Mordax's opinon on him.

The statement I was trying to make about point 3 was that they were good episodes even though more than half the season was bad.
About point 4:
Name one thing that makes Veruca or Sunday better than Adam.

My favourite is probably either Season 2 or Season 5 - although Season 5 was probably better overall, I'm still loving the Angel/Angelus plot twist at the end of Season 2. Worst would definitely be Season 4, though - weak story arc, and the introduction of *gulp* Riley. Even Season 1 didn't sink that low.

Heh, I do. But it baffles me that those tastes include a majority (majority!!) of people thinking S1 is better than S4. Yes, Prophecy Girl is fabulous, and is in my top 10. But there is no other standout episode. Some of them are kinda fun, but other than Prophecy Girl, anyone of them, I could take it or leave it, with the possible exception of Angel (only because it's a vital arc/mythology ep, not cuz it's so great). I mean, they were good, but they don't really compare to almost everything that came after (with the exception of some horrific early S2 eps, but I'm not getting into that discussion again ).

I don't really want to get too much into a debate here about this. I mean, it's just gonna devolve into a point where people don't see Who Are You? and Restless as high points of S4, yet mention The Witch and Invisible Girl among the dizzying heights of S1. Oh wait, that already happened.

Hi, guys.
/me sits back down at the thread table

Biz:
Thanks.

dnewton:
Quote:

Actually, there was a lot I didn't like about the ep. It had a few good moments (Xander vs. the Evil Clown, Buffy vs. the Master), but mostly, it didn't work for me. (Giant wasps, vamp Buffy - I just didn't enjoy it as much as the others.)

Quote:
Name one thing that makes Veruca or Sunday better than Adam.

That doesn't have to do with my argument.

S1: Cool main villain. I liked the Master - he loved his job.
S2: Cool main villain. I liked Angelus - he loved his job.
S3: Cool main villain. The Mayor ruled. He was, like, an evil Mr. Rogers.
S5: Cool main villain. Glory was vapid, but at least she was crazy.

S4: Adam. Dull as dirt. I couldn't like him. I couldn't hate him. He was a paperweight.

So, he's a con.

Quote:
Well you're wrong just take another look at Primeval or Restless to see what I mean.

What Biz said.

BigRock:
/me sighs

I'm not interested in "debating," either.
You like S4 better. I like S1 better.
This is an opinion thing: we are both Right. Isn't it neat?

However, I would like to explain my position, so it won't baffle you anymore.

Season 1
I don't have any real complaints about the season, overall. I liked the arc. I liked the Big Bad. There weren't a lot of distractions from the main characters (Xander, Willow, Buffy, Giles).

It was a good season. (And I don't understand how you could "take or leave" The Witch, or the Puppet Show. That's crazy talk, IMO.)

More than that, this is the season where I got hooked on the show.

Season 4
- No more Cordy.
- Xander and Giles (my other faves) got shafted.
- The Big Bad bored me to tears.
- The main story arc was Stoopid, IMO. I hated the Initiative.
- Riley bored me.

Yes, S4 has many fine episodes. But, as a season, it was weaker.

(As I said above, it wasn't really the same show I'd been watching, for 3 years. It was something new, and I didn't like it as much.)

Does that make more sense?

- Riley:
Make him a part of the team.

See, I didn't hate Riley. What bugged me was, they made too much of the show Buffy and Riley, instead of Buffy and Friends. I would've liked to see him be a part of the Scooby Gang, instead of removing screen time from, like, Xander.

I also didn't like the B/R romance. IMO, they didn't have any chemistry. I would've preferred a brother/sister relationship, there.

I've got nothing against Marc Blucas. He did okay.

- Adam:
For one thing? I wish he'd enjoyed his work, instead of being deadpan all the time.

Riley was part of the gang.
See New Moon Rising to Restless for examples.
As for B/R chemistry just look at the end of Hush and why would you make it a Brother/Sister Relationship in the first place?

Favorite: S5 (by a nose over S2)
Least: S4 (and can I say duh? )

dnewton:

First of all, welcome (as we haven't formally met in previous threads..... )

Now, a few points about why so many people are calling S4 the big dud.... Interestingly enough, when we did individual ep ratings, S4 didn't fare nearly as bad -- however, this reflects what I alluded in previous threads -- whereas S2/3 (and now S5) were more than the sum of their parts, S4 was much, much less.....

Why?

1) Buffy/Riley
As mordax and others have alluded to, no heat whatsoever -- interestingly, the eps which had the most B/R stuff going on in S4 bored me the most (WTWTA really comes close to the all-time low IMHO for BTVS eps).....

2) TI/Adam
As mentioned, every other season has had very credible and cool Black Hats; S4 really suffered in this department.... The only useful thing TI ever did was chipping Spike, and even then they couldn't even hold onto him for more than one ep.....

3) Riley vs. Scooby Gang
Hate to disagree, but Riley wasn't a Scooby Gang member, just like Tara or Spike weren't in S4 -- remember Xander questioning Riley at the start of This Year's Girl? And like it or not, the B/R and TI storyline took away valuable screen time for the Scoobies -- no question Xander & Giles really became bit players for most of S4.... I realize part of the S4 goal was to have Buffy find her way in the Uni life, but the end result was more mediocre screen time with Riley and TI at the expense of more Scooby action -- and by S5, we can clearly see which was stronger...

4) Taking away adam/Riley
I think you touched on why so many people dislike S4 -- whereas you liked both adam & Riley, I thought they were both weak (although Riley did grow on me more in S5 -- especially when he left ).... If you like them both, then I can certainly understand your viewpoint, even if I don't agree with it....

5) S1 vs. S4
I suspect a big reason why many people have left out S1 as their least favorite is threefold:

a. It was the original season, which gave us the original Gang and provided for the character development (Xander longing for Buffy, Willow longing for Xander, B/A romance starting, etc.) that S2 then took off with....
b. It had only 12 eps, which made it easier for great eps like Prophecy Girl, NKABOTFD, Angel, WTTH & The Harvest to stand out more (one could argue that Teacher's Pet & The Pack could stink more with a shorter season, however most seem to remember the best of each season)... conversely, although S4 had Hush, The Faith Duology & Restless, with a 22 ep season its effect was weaker on the overall impression.....
c. S1 had Buffy/Angel, S4 had Buffy/Riley -- 'nuff said....

So, in closing....

Episode: BTVS S2 IOHEFY
Giles/RM: "I appreciate your thoughts on the matter. In fact, I encourage you to always challenge viewpoints or opinions when you feel it's appropriate. You should never be curbed by others. Simply of course in this instance when I'm clearly right and you're clearly wrong."

I am in pretty thorough agreement with Righteousman, here.

And, like I said to BigRock: it's okay for us to disagree about this stuff. It's just opinions.

I was preparing a lengthy reply to this one, but Righteousman[b] got there first.

I basically agree with everything he said, except that my favorite season is a toss-up between S5 and S3. Oh, and [b]The Pack
is actually one of the highlights of S1...
